The Legacy of Whitlow’s
Whitlow’s has a storied history in the DC region. The original Whitlow’s was founded in 1946 when David Whitlow opened a bar and grill at the corner of 11th and E Streets NW in DC. That venue was purchased 25 years later by Greg Cahill who ran the operation from 1971 until 1989. In 1995, Cahill, his wife Susie and son, Jon Williams, reopened as Whitlow’s on Wilson in Clarendon and, for 26 years, it was a beloved neighborhood gathering spot and destination for good food, a great bar and good times.
In 2022, Whitlow’s came back to DC where it now stands on three levels in the bustling Shaw neighborhood at the corner of 9th and U Streets NW. It is still known for homestyle cooking, great drinks, even better ambiance and a rooftop tiki bar.

Having been patrons of Whitlow’s on Wilson since their early 20’s, Sea Suite’s Jack Maher and Jack Walten were familiar faces to Jon Williams. In them, Jon saw an opportunity to bring his longtime dream of a buoyant bar on the river to life. With this partnership, the legacy continues….
Jon, an accomplished restaurateur, has been able to combine his expertise with that of the Jacks’ successful entrepreneurship in creating a fleet of commercial vessels. The Whitlow’s on Water team, comprised of a dynamic group of Whitlow’s and Sea Suite owners, is dedicated to weaving together Whitlow’s rich history with, perhaps, the most unique bar concept in the region. The result is transporting passengers to an island state of mind, surrounded by breathtaking views and a touch of nautical whimsey.
